The following is an update on contract negotiations between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) concerning UC patient care technical and service employees
On Thursday, May 29, 2008, the Public Employment Relations Board informed attorneys for UC and AFSCME of the board’s intention to join the university in pursuing a restraining order against an AFSCME strike of patient care technical employees. Shortly thereafter the University of California received notice from AFSCME that it was withdrawing its previously announced plans for both the patient care technical and the service unit to strike UC facilities on June 4-5, 2008.
In light of AFSCME’s strike withdrawal, UC suspended its pursuit of a restraining order against the union. Subsequently, a joint agreement was made by UC and AFSCME to return to the bargaining table with the assistance of a third party neutral mediator. The parties met with mediators from the State Mediation and Conciliation service on Friday, May 30, and mediators continued to work with UC and the union throughout the weekend in pursuit of potential settlements.
The union, through its attorneys, has assured the university that there will be no strike on June 4 or June 5 and that it will give ten days notice in the event that it renews efforts to pursue a strike action in either bargaining unit.
UC has been negotiating with AFSCME for the last ten months for a new contract for more than 11,000 UC patient care technical employees, and for the last seven months for a new contract for 8,000 UC service employees.
