UC Irvine's Lynda Brewer is the newly selected 2006-2007 Staff Advisor to The Regents. The two-year Staff-Advisor pilot program was initiated last year by the UC Board of Regents, with the strong endorsement of President Dynes. The program is designed to improve direct communication between UC employees and the Board and to help facilitate staff input into the Board's deliberations and decisions. During its initial year, 2005-2006, two non-voting Advisors were selected to attend two Regental committees:  the Committee on Educational Policy and the Committee on Grounds and Buildings. In order to assure continuity of expertise, one of the current Staff Advisors, Dave Miller of UCLA, has agreed to serve an additional year for 2006-2007.

From 27 applications received throughout the University system, Brewer ultimately was chosen from a group of strong candidates by President Robert Dynes with the concurrence of Chairman Gerald Parksy. She will begin her term as Staff Advisor on July 1, 2006. Should The Regents decide to extend the Staff Advisor program, she will continue to serve for a second year in 2007-2008.

"I'm delighted that Lynda Brewer has accepted appointment as the new Staff Advisor to The Regents," Dynes said. "With almost thirty years of service to UC, she brings to the position a wealth of knowledge and experience that will greatly enhance the Board's discussions of the vital issues facing the University in the 21st century."

Brewer is the assistant director of Capital Planning on the Irvine campus. Over her career of nearly 30 years at UCI, she has been given progressively more responsible positions within the Planning and Budget organization, starting as a senior clerk in 1976 and leading to her current classification of senior educational facility planner.

She has been actively involved with the UCI Staff Assembly for approximately a decade and has been a campus delegate to the Council of University of California Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) for four years. She also has been a member of UCI Academic and Professional Women for approximately fifteen years. For the past three years, she has participated as a member of the campus Budget Work Group, which is chaired by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and is responsible for developing strategies and determining practices for effectively managing campus resources. She was appointed to this committee to provide staff input in this critical area.

Brewer's goals as a sitting Staff Advisor include helping to build relationships based on mutual respect--to enable members of both the Board and the staff to gain a higher level of understanding, respect and interaction; and to provide a role model for University citizenry. Brewer feels that it is important to be an active member of one's community and to participate in making it a better place. She would like to challenge staff to become more involved in University governance and she feels that setting an example is an important role. Brewer relishes the opportunity to contribute her staff experience to the Regental process and to put a face and a voice to a talented workforce dedicated to the continued success of the University of California.
