[March 7, 2001]
The University of California is modifying the way it withholds an employee's portion (if any) of medical, dental, vision, and legal premiums for employees paid on a biweekly payment schedule. Beginning with the March 14, 2001 check, biweekly paid employees will have deducted from the first biweekly payroll of each month the entire employee-paid portion for the following month's coverage. For subsequent biweekly payrolls in the month, biweekly paid employees should not see deductions for medical, dental, vision, or legal premiums.
Up until now, employees paid biweekly received the University's full contributions toward medical, dental, and/or vision premiums in the first check for the next month's coverage (for example, coverage for March would be paid with the mid-February paycheck). However, biweekly paid employees paid half of their premiums from their first biweekly check and paid the remaining portion from their next biweekly check.
To align the withholding of employee premium deductions with University contributions, the University will begin to withhold the employee's premiums from the same check in which the University issues the contributions.
If you have any questions regarding the deductions that appear on your mid-March biweekly check, please contact your local Payroll (or Benefits) Office.
