Dancing in London
Byron Wheeler, UC Santa Cruz
I'm riding the bus to dance class and rehearsals in London's Kentish Town,
North London from our flat a street away from the British Museum. I'm
approaching my second year of my partner's three year appointment with UC's
Education Abroad Program from which I retired after 15 good years.
In fact, I retired in order to live in London and with my free, retiree
time decided to return to dancing after stopping in 1980 (I'd been professional).
I exercise five days a week at the YMCA around the corner from our flat (built
in 1897) and on Mondays also slip into dance togs (no tights) for ballet
followed by tap. Ballet is an old friend but tap is new and something else!
Last year and this, our local council sponsored a dance festival, so I'll
be "on the boards" in July in three numbers among with many community
members. So I'm enjoying being here -- schmoozing, exploring, schmoozing,
and learning about politics, history and struggles, lots of struggles.
