California to Ireland to Spain
Robert J. Carter, UC Santa Barbara

After two years of retirement in California I decided to return to my roots in Ireland. My parents, sisters and a brother were there so I thought it a good place to start a new life.

Because I retired at 55 my pension wasn’t what it could have been, so I worked part time for my brother in his company, for a local boatyard and for a friend in his company. About a year after I returned to Ireland I got a mortgage and bought a small house on an acre of land and was going to live happily ever after. Three years later and a two week vacation in Spain got me thinking that maybe I could have a cheaper and better life outside of Ireland. So after 2 more trips and some research, I sold my Irish property and I am enjoying my new life in Spain.

seville spainEvery Friday my friends and I go in search of new places to have lunch, we have over 100 restaurants on our list, most within a ten mile radius of where we live.

I like living in Spain because of the low cost of living and because there are a lot of retired English speaking people living in this area (The Costa Blanca). I speak a little Spanish and I use it as much as possible but I could get by without it here.

If you would like to retire here become a resident because it will entitle you to free medical care and many other benefits.
