[March 11, 2008]

The University met with UPTE to begin negotiations on a successor contract for research support professional employees and technical employees on March 5^th - 7^th, 2008 in Berkeley.

During these first days of bargaining, the parties verbally exchanged opening statements regarding their respective goals for the set of negotiations and then had lengthy discussions regarding the establishment of a set of "ground rules" for bargaining. On one of the three days, the parties were joined by approximately 100 employees, invited by the union. The parties heard from several members of this large audience and continued with their detailed exchange regarding the best framework for productive negotiations between the parties. The parties will next meet on March 19^th - 20^th in Los Angeles.
