Clarification: Duties that an NSF has assumed, but are neither assigned nor expected, shall not be considered as part of the unit member’s workload.

Example #1. if an NSF agrees to direct an independent study that is not approved by the chair, that work will not count toward the NSF’s assigned workload.

Example #2. An NSF decides to increase the number of graded assignments in the course based on his or her personal academic judgment. Unless those additional assignments are required by the department, they are considered voluntary. On the other hand, departments should not expect NSF to perform unassigned duties, nor should they penalize NSF for refusing to perform unassigned duties.
