The University of California employs approximately 3,300 (approximately 2,700 FTE) licensed health care professionals who provide a great variety of clinical and medical services at the University's five medical centers, nine student health centers and numerous outpatient clinics. The University operates the nation's largest health sciences and medical training program, and its network of five medical centers and associated facilities represents the fourth-largest health care delivery system in California. UC medical centers provide patient-care services valued at nearly $7 billion annually, accounting for more than 3.9 million clinic visits and over 290,000 emergency room visits a year. All non-supervisory, non-managerial health care professionals are in a systemwide bargaining unit which is represented by the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union. Following PERB's decision to place these titles into an HX unit, an election was held for union representation. In 1997, the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) won the election to become the exclusive representative of employees in the unit. In that initial vote, 56% of those eligible to vote, voted and of those who voted, 66% voted for representation. The current UPTE contract is effective May 30, 2007 through June 30, 2011.
