As you know, officials are bracing for possible flooding and mudslides in the Los Alamos area in the aftermath of the Cerro Grande fire. If you think you may need flood insurance, this may be a good time to take action. Also, here is an important reminder: There is a 30-day waiting period before a new flood insurance policy becomes effective. No coverage exists until 30 days after you buy the policy.

Flood damage to your home can be insured only with a flood insurance policy—no other insurance will cover flood damage.

If you are insured with California Casualty, you can call them at 1-800-800-8290 to add flood coverage. California Casualty's website includes general information about flood insurance.

Flood insurance may be purchased through most insurance companies as well as through your local Federal Emergency Management Office, which administers the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP's website includes a helpful "Information for Consumers" site which provides information on coverage and cost of flood insurance, how to purchase and pay for the insurance, and how to reduce flood damage to your home or business.
