A buyback is a payment to establish service credit in the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP) for certain leaves of absence, to reestablish service credit for previous UCRP membership for which you received a refund of accumulations, or to eliminate a noncontributory offset to your UCRP benefit. By choosing to make a buyback, you generally increase your retirement benefit.

Active UCRP members may elect a buyback at any time. In most cases, a buyback will cost less if elected within three years of returning to work at UC.

For more information about buybacks, see the Buyback Booklet [PDF] or your local Benefits Office.
