UC's Supplemental Disability Plan premiums are increasing 15% beginning with the premium withheld from enrolled employees' February 1, 2009 paychecks. The premium is based on your age and gross covered monthly salary as of January 1, 2009. Although the plan is not open for enrollment at this time, you can increase your waiting period, and reduce your premium, at any time. For example, if you are currently enrolled in supplemental disability with a seven-day waiting period, you might consider increasing the waiting period to 30 days if you have enough accrued sick leave to cover the longer waiting period. Please make sure you consider your options carefully before you make a change. If you choose to reduce your waiting period at a later time, you must submit an application via statement of health. This change is subject to review by Liberty Mutual and may be approved or denied. Women who plan to use Supplemental Disability coverage for pregnancy disability and child birth should note that, depending on your available sick leave and whether or not your pregnancy/delivery has complications, you may not be "disabled" long enough to receive benefits unless you have a seven-day or 30-day waiting period.
